hello roomie

hey guys, so I finally managed to move into a room with a roommate! it took an entire semester but it happened. It was actually quite a mission to get a room and a roommate I was cool with. Basically inorder for me to get the room I have now, I needed to wait for a German dude to return home, for a Brazil guy to move into the German guys room, a Jamaican dude to move into the Brazil guys room and then I took the Jamaican dudes spot. Luckily this all happened in one day so it wasn’t messy at all. So now I’m living with a dude from Burundi. Haha of course I know most of you don’t know where that is, probably with the exception of MAYBE Nahum. Google maps it now. =P

Can you guess what this is? Well basically its my home made humidifier. Every couple days I fill it with tap water, and this is why you can not drink chinese tap water. It’s not very clean and has a shit load of calcium in it. The calcium in the water also slowly destroys your tooth brushes, combs, etc.

I put it under my “heater”. The Heater is actually an Airconditioner that can go up to 30 degrees celcius, pretty ghetto eh? GO CHINA!

Now welcome to my new room. 909. I’m actually right below Leo, he always makes jokes like “HEY NOAH IF I STOMP ON THE FLOOR CAN YOU HEAR IT?” Well now I can. Also cool fact, Burundi people speak French and English, and my roommate is also fluent in Chinese. Hopefully I can come back fluent in all three…. =)

So this is my room at a first glance. I’m also on an all guys floor so theres constantly something going on. Such as music constantly blasting from atleast one room at a time.

This is my side of the room, I didn’t take a picture of his side just to be respectful, just incase. However this guy has like 20 speakers and an amp. He plays guitar really really well, so I often watch him practise.

We also have a TV and a nice view… of Beijing. Thats my plant. Apparently its one of the best indoor plants to have.

Just another view of my room, I just got back when I took these pictures so my bed is in a wreck and stuff, aw whatever.

Check my table. No too messy is it =)?

Can’t forget my shoes. Aw very lovely =).

And last but not least, I finally ended up buying a real humidifier. Work’s like a charm.

Yea well incase you’re too lazy to google maps, Burundi is in D.R. Congo. It’s a very very small country in Africa that has a population of 8 million. Their originally a french colony but because of government stuff they are forced to learn english as well. That’s all I’ve really learned so far. Also I’m travelling to Dongbei, Harbin on the 27th by some nice train I found, so if I don’t blog by March, I’m lost and possibly gone. Haha just kidding, sorry Mom. I’ll be staying with Dongbei locals so I’ll be perfectly fine. They also have internet and I’m living in a city so I’ll probably blog while I’m over there if anything. I’m getting excited to go into -30 degree Celsius weather again. Thank god I’m Canadian. hahhaa

one LOVE

peace

Noah, your news of a new roommate sent me immediately to the Wikipedia entry on Burundi. It’s an interesting history in the transitions from Germany to Belgium to independence. As one of the smaller countries in Africa, and one of the poorest countries in the world, it faces a lot of challenges.

I had a Belgian roommate when I was in graduate school, so I suspect you’ll get cues now and then on how the French language training in Canada at least provides a good foundation.

The residual white powder you see after you evaporate water is lime, not calcium. There may also be sediment of unknown source. White vinegar will remove the lime. China does not add calcium or anything else to the water. You need to boil water in China because all water from the tap is untreated and can have harmful bacteria and viruses. Boiling for 20 mins will kill all bacteria and viruses.

I also used to evaporate water in Beijing, but I just put a pot of water on top of the heater in the room. You can do this also. Beijing is so dry it kills your skin.

so what’s his name unless he doesn’t want it published. and how old is he? what is he studying and how long will he be in China? do you notice how parents only ask questions? you can asked aunt Tracy to bring you more Omega 3 capsules from Costco (since King has a membership) if they have room in their luggage
